The day is almost here, and Halloween is everywhere! It’s a spooky and fun holiday to celebrate, with plenty to do with your pup. Here’s how you can enjoy some Halloween with your dog:
1. Get them a costume
I mean, this goes without saying. You have to get your pup some form of a costume! The superhero ones are pretty great and often fit comfortably on your dog. This year, Harley is dressing as Batman and Isla is dressing as Batgirl!
If your pup doesn’t like wearing big costumes, you can always fit them with a spooky-themed bow or bandana.
2. Trick or treat? Why not both!
For a fun searching and tracking game, try this: pick several spots around the house and yard and plant treats for your pup to find. Then, have them sit and wait, and even watch as you hide each one. Once the treats are hidden, set them off to seek them out. A trick for a treat!
For dogs who are experienced trackers, the treats will be found in no time. For puppies, you may need to help them out a bit. Once they get the hang of it, you can replace the treats with toys, and make the game more difficult by picking trickier hiding spots.
3. Go pumpkin picking
Do you usually go to the grocery store to buy a pumpkin for your jack-o-lantern? This year, bring your pup along for the adventure by heading to a dog-friendly pumpkin patch instead. On a nice fall day, you can enjoy the weather and choose a pumpkin together. As an added bonus, you can always use the pumpkin carvings to make a tasty snack for your dog.
4. Check out doggie-themed Halloween events
Once outfitted with a costume, you and your pup are ready to attend a dog-themed Halloween event. Find out if anything is happening in your neighbourhood, like a parade or family outdoor event. If you thought seeing your own pooch dressed up in a costume was awesome, imagine seeing dressed-up doggies everywhere in sight.
5. Be safe and have fun!
Halloween can be so much fun, but it’s important to be safe:
- If your pup scares easily, keep outdoor activities to the daytime.
- Candy is delicious for us, but not good for our pups so be sure to keep a close eye on your pup in case they pick something up off the ground.
- If you do take your dog out at night, fit them with a collar light and reflective leash so that they’re easy to spot in the dark
- Kids and dogs don’t always mix, so keep your dog at your side when there are lots of kids around. This way, everyone stays happy and safe.
