The Dog Mama’s Christmas gift to you: what a dog owner wants for Christmas
Oh, Christmas time… what a lovely time of year! Sparkling lights on street lamps, choirs singing carols and the smells of pine from Christmas trees in every living room corner. For some, Christmas is their favourite time of year. But for most, it is down right stressful when trying to buy gifts for your family. This is especially true when you have no idea what they’d like. To help you shop for your dog-owning relatives, I have crafted a list of what to get a dog owner for Christmas.
Poop bags!
Yes, it is wonderful to receive poop bags for your dogs, even as a gift. It’s especially nice when your dog likes to poop twice every walk (*ahem* Isla). Nowadays, you can get poop bags in tons of different patterns, so look around for something Christmas themed. If there is one thing a dog owner needs more than anything else, it’s poop bags!
Poop bag holder
Well, dog owners do need something to hold all of those poop bags. You usually find these dispensers in the same section of a store as the bags. I can confirm that they’re great accessories to have. If you can get one with a clip for a leash or belt loop- even better.
A leash
Even if they already have a leash for their dog, a nice leash is always appreciated. With bigger dogs especially, it’s not as easy to find accessories for them, so their collars and leashes tend to be all that they wear. With that in mind, a nice sturdy leather leash is a great gift. If they don’t already have one, I’d definitely recommend a leash with loops (like a Smoochy Poochy leash). These leashes are are great for walking your dog hands-free and tying up your dog when needed.
No-slip bowls
Mealtime is very exciting for every dog. A great way to reduce the spills and mess that this excitement can cause is with no-slip food bowls. These bowls have rubber grips on the bottoms so that they don’t shift around during mealtime. If the dog owner you’re buying for already has one for feeding, you can always get another one for water.
Booties or paw wax
With the winter season starting, so too does the season of liberally salting all walkways. If your dog owner gift recipient is a city dweller, they will appreciate rubber booties or paw wax to protect their dogs paws (and their hardwood floors) from salt. When buying the booties, I advise getting a gift receipt just in case the sizing isn’t right. Unless you can try them on the dog in store, it’s hard to tell what the right fit will be.
Lint rollers (and refills)
If a dog owner told you they didn’t use lint rollers, they would be lying to you. To most furry pet owners, I think it’s safe to say lint rollers are like gold. Without them, I wouldn’t be able to wear black clothing without looking like a crazy dog lady. Lint rollers come in plenty of different patterns too, so you’re likely to find something seasonal.
Brushes
If you know what brush(es) they need for their dog, a nice brush is a great gesture. If you don’t know what brushes they might need, check out my blog on how to choose the right brushing routine for your dog.
Gift card to their local pet store
There is always something one needs or wants for their dog, so gift cards are the perfect gift. This is especially useful for a new dog owner who is likely needing to buy out the entire store at once. If it’s not pet food, toys or treats, a gift card could be used for other services at the store, like grooming or a dog washing station!
Cleaning supplies
When Isla was a puppy, we went through tons of paper towel, lysol wipes and stain remover. Given that puppies are pretty expensive in general, I know that I would have loved to receive cleaning supplies myself. Arrange some cleaning materials in a basket with a nice bow, and you’ll have one appreciative dog owner!
And that concludes my list of what to get a dog owner for Christmas. Did I miss anything? Tell us in the comments below what you would wants for Christmas as a dog owner!
